September 20: Mabon Stew

Today I participated in a Mabon ritual that I thought I’d share with you, should you be hungry for an idea. The initial version was written by Eric in 2018 for a coven that formed for a year and a day. I reworked and added to it in 2023 based off of a stew recipe I found by Kylie – the food blogger, photographer, and recipe developer behind Midwest Foodie.

It involves casting a circle then making a vegan stew where each ingredient is added with with intention, reciting the meaning as it was added to the pot. We forgot the mushrooms, and the corn was a new addition. Feel free to do what works for you.

Making it more magickal was that members of today’s coven were guests of that coven!

May you have a blessed Mabon.

FYI: If you are on the East Coast, the exact time is 8:05pm.

Mini Mabon 2023 Magical Vegan Stew

To a large pot add
9 tablespoons olive oil for peace:
Liquid gold from the fruit of a gnarled tree
You bring joy, kindness, and peace to me.
Your magic stretches back to antiquity
Your connection to the divine brings harmony

2-3 yellow onions for good health:
Bulb of light, root of health
Wrap me in your psychic wealth
Throughout the coming months of stillness
Protect me from all types of illness

Three cups carrots for manifestation:
Fertile root, food of Mars,
For you I thank my lucky stars
Grow my wishes, bless my desires
Your magic is what this stew requires

Three cups celery to improve psychic powers:
Stalks of green that tower
Help improve my psychic power
I now have a holy trinity in my pot
With carrots and onions, it’s a spiritual lot

Cook for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Then add the following:

3 pounds baby Bella mushrooms, halved, to hold duality:
Life and death, pain and pleasure
Help me embrace them with equal measure
Good and evil, dark and light
Mushrooms bring balance to this rite

Put in 12-15 cloves garlic, sliced thin, for good health:
Herb of fire, bulb of power
I call to you at this hour
To ward off illness for a life that is long
Keep me healthy, pain free, and strong

Add 6 teaspoons dried thyme to attract good luck:
You make a potent magical queen
With woody stems and evergreen
You bring me luck that is all good
Season my life as this food you would

Add 1-1/2 teaspoon sage to increase wisdom:
In many cultures since the times of old
You’re an herb of immortality so told
Sage make me wise in magic
So works I do are never tragic

Add 3 teaspoons dried oregano for happiness
From the Mediterranean to Mexico
These cultures all use oregano
Which to this stew brings joy
For us to welcome and enjoy

Several pinches of salt for protection:
Pinches of salt to eliminate the negative
Your powers of protection to me do give
I add you to purify all I do
Banish evil that my magic be true

A few pinches black pepper for warding:
Adding this pepper will deflect
Any harm we may suspect
Its power is a barrier from
Bad from somewhere that does come

Cook 5-7 minutes.
Add 6 tablespoons flour & stir to evenly coat everything.

6 tablespoons flour to teach sacrifice:
Shafts of wheat, symbol of life
Made into bread and cut with a knife
Giving of yourself to sustain nations
Demonstrates sacrifice, selfless donations

Cook 5 minutes while stirring.

Stir in 1/2 to 2/3 cup balsamic vinegar and deglaze pan
Vinegar for fire energy:
Planet Mars brings us fire
Its energy to acquire
In here it gets placed
And its power embraced

Add 9 cups of vegetable broth for sisterhood: (add slowly until it's consistency of gravy, then add the rest. Consider holding back a cup or so until later in the process to be sure it is needed)
Bless this broth from vegetables
Like all of us, each one incredible
Blended together for nourishment and taste
Like all of use here in one loving embrace

Add 3 pounds baby yellow potatoes, cut in half,
for stability & grounding:
Joyous nightshade, ruled by the moon
Your powers add to this stew a boon
Thank you for providing stability
Ground me now in this sacred reality

Add 3 cups uncooked split red lentils for energy:
These red lentils we add to the rest
To give us energy, passion, and zest
Ruled by Mercury they bring creativity
Expanding our travel and activity

Add 30 ounces diced or crushed tomatoes for an aphrodisiac:
(Like broth, consider holding back a cup or so based on consistency.)
Tomatoes so red
So mote it be said
The love you promote
To ourselves we devote

Put in 5-6 bay leaves for its many gifts:
This old cultivated tree has many gifts for me
All which I accept with with gratitude and glee
Manifestation, healing, protection from harm
Success, clarity, bay's a good luck charm

Add two cups corn for abundance
Golden corn like the sun,
brings abundance, prosperity,
Resilience, and survival.
Our last ingredient, our work is done

Bring stew to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
Do not boil. Turn heat to low and simmer gently 15-20 minutes
or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Add reserved liquid if needed.

When the stew is ready, garnish with fresh parsley for good energy:
Vibrant and green, a flavorful herb.
The good energy you give is superb
Thank you for your magickal powers
Coming to me this day and this hour
