June 19: Why Dubuque
Today I drove around Dubuque, Iowa’s oldest city and one of the oldest settlements west of the Mississippi River. While observing the river from another place in the Mines of Spain Recreation Area, I met Kelly who had seen my bus the night before down by the river museum. We began talking and he led me to the tower (There is a photo on my Facebook page.) by way of a road rather than the hiking trail my knee would not have survived. I learned about the town, his life, and other places to visit.
I walked through a couple of stores, but only bought some ice for the fridge, and some strawberries to add to my Litha celebration tomorrow. I’m chilling the bottle of Summer Solstice mead I got months ago at a winery and setting the altar. I doubt I will be able to see the sunrise at 5:25am because it will be raining, but I will be awake to greet him all the same. Perhaps even making it to the river.
May the sun’s light, warmth, and power bless you tomorrow and always.
