April 14: Alligator Alley

Some of Karmalita’s contents shifted while bumping along roads that get worse year after year. Mile after mile of potholes, patches, construction, cracks, crumbling, and closures. Gotta give the 1% their tax breaks.

The one-way dirt road meandering 4.5 miles through the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge was in better condition than some of the paved roads I drove today in South Carolina. I enjoyed a leisurely drive through freshwater marshes and hardwood forests, stopping now and again to watch birds, jumping fish, and alligators (about 10 in all) swimming by.

I am amazed that I’ve already lined up places to stay through the end of the month when I arrive in Connecticut. I am especially looking forward to distilleries and breweries … my first is tomorrow night.
